The Doctor of biological sciences, professor (fresh-water hydrobiology), academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, honoured worker of a science and technique of Ukraine.

The author of more than 300 scientific papers, including 12 monographies and course of «FUNDAMENTAL HYDROECOLOGY» for the students of ecological and biological specialities of higher educational institutions. The main scientific works are devoted to physiological-biochemical mechanisms of adaptation of hydrobionts to thermal, salt and ionic factors of the water environment and development of the conceptual approaches of an ecological estimation and forecasting of changes in the water ecosystems under anthropogeneous influence.

The researches in the field of disclosure of mechanisms of water organisms adaptation to abiotic factors have been awarded to the Yuriev Premium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1984), and the cycle of works «Ecological bases of biotechnologies of reproduction of fishes and invertebrates in aquaculture» - Schmalhausen Premium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2002).

Viktor Romanenko has been awarded twice to the State Premium of Ukraine in the field of a science and technique: in 1995 together with the colleagues for development of scientific bases and approaches to an ecological estimation of influence of large-scale hydraulic engineering construction on the water objects, their bioproductivity and water quality; in 2004 as the author of the course for high schools of «FUNDAMENTAL HYDROECOLOGY»

He worked as a lecturer of the Ukrainian Academy of agricultural sciences, senior scientist of the О.О. Bogomolets Institute of Physiology, assistant of the main scientific secretary of Presidium of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Since 1972 – Head of the Department of ecological physiology of water animals at the Institute of Hydrobiology of NAS of Ukraine, and since 1980 - Director of this Institute.

Viktor Romanenko combines his scientific-organizational work with pedagogical activity. He is the President of the Hydroecological Society of Ukraine, editor-in-chief of the international «Hydrobiological Journal».

Viktor Romanenko was elected as the national deputy and member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, assistant of the head of Committee on ecology and rational use of natural resources of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1989).
